The conference’s theme will be “Parks for Nature and People,” emphasising the relationship between nature and society.
The Congress aims to bring together protected area practitioners and the broader community to share experiences, learn from one another, and respond to the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century.

These events provide valuable information, essential for understanding the environmental challenges marine mammals face that may also affect human populations and the importance of proper marine and coastal conservation policies. The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs. To mobilize action, the Conference will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.

The marine megafauna & blue carbon: how protecting charismatic ocean species contributes to climate protection , an official UN Ocean Conference side event, will take place on June 29th at the Pavilion of Knowledge. The event will focus on the ecosystem functions of marine megafauna, including cetaceans and other marine mammals, key policy and principles, and their main threats, whilst highlighting key solutions for their protection and threat mitigation. In collaboration with the Ocean Governance Marine Mammal Twinning, and others, the Marine Mammals Management Toolkit will be presented as a potential solution to equip MPA managers and policy makers with tools to effectively manage marine mammals through Marine Protected Areas, protecting critical ecosystem functions.
