Street Whale: when art meets science to celebrate whales

Share:

The African Marine Mammal Conservation Organization (AMMCO) organised a festival in November 2021 entitled STREET WHALE, to raise awareness and promote the conservation of whales and other aquatic megafauna species as well as their habitat in Cameroon through the combination of art and scientific discussion forums.

Its main (and largest!) outcome is a 12-meter-long plastic whale, accompanying a fishing canoe and other structures made of 2,000 plastic bottles collected during a beach clean-up activity.

The STREET WHALE festival brought together various stakeholders, including institutional stakeholders (national and international), academic partners, private sector companies, civil society organizations, fishing communities and the general public, to educate and foster discussions on issues related to marine biodiversity.

The festival is aimed to be a step towards concerted global action to better address marine and coastal issues in Cameroon.
